The thornless honey locust is a favourite of urban designers: its light crown lets sunlight through (grass grows right up to the trunk), its tiny leaflets never clog drains or gutters, and the thornless variety is safe for playgrounds and pavements.
The species' pods contain a sweet pulp, hence the name honey locust; Native Americans used it as a sweetener and to brew a beer-like drink.
