An evergreen shrub with glossy dark-green leaves and large panicles of white flowers in late summer. It can reach ten metres.
Evergreen and extremely tolerant of pollution and pruning, the glossy privet is among the most planted street trees in southern Europe: a dense glossy crown, fragrant white late-summer blossom and berries that feed urban birds in winter.
Its name comes from the Latin ligare, to bind: its flexible branches were woven into baskets as far back as Roman times. In China its berries have been used in traditional medicine for two thousand years.
