In the urban landscape

Large, fast and scenic, the Caucasian wingnut is perfect for parks with moist soils or lakesides: its spreading crown shades huge areas, and the long garlands of winged fruit hanging in summer are a unique decorative feature.

Did you know?

The name Pterocarya means "winged nut": its seeds hang in green necklaces half a metre long. Having survived the ice ages only in the Caucasus, it returned to Europe through 18th-century botanical gardens.
