The field elm is an identity tree of the Italian landscape, now making a comeback in forestry projects thanks to Dutch elm disease-resistant clones: it grows fast, tolerates pollution and poor soils, and supports a rich fauna of butterflies and birds.

Did you know?

Like the maple, for centuries it served as "husband" to the grapevine in the Po Valley. The Dutch elm disease that decimated it in the 20th century reached Europe in infected timber shipments: today nurseries select immune specimens.
