With its imposing trunk and crown of fan-shaped leaves, the Washingtonia instantly lends a "riviera" character to seafronts, avenues and resorts: it grows quickly, withstands wind, drought and brief frosts, and coexists happily with paving and sand.
It is California's only native palm and can exceed 20 metres; the dry leaves that skirt its trunk sheltered whole flocks of birds and provided weaving material for the native Cahuilla people.
