Native to North America, prized for its decorative foliage and spectacular autumn colour changes.
The sweetgum is among the most spectacular trees for city avenues: its regular pyramidal shape needs very little pruning, and in autumn a single crown shades from golden yellow to almost-black purple. It copes well with waterlogging and has few disease problems.
Its name means "liquid amber": cutting the bark yields a fragrant balsamic resin, once used in perfumery and chewed as gum by Native Americans.
